Natural Healing – Use the Sun to Reduce Cancer Risk

For years now we have been exhorted to avoid the sun, to cover up and to use sun screen so we can avoid getting skin cancer. However, unfortunately it looks as though we have thrown the baby out with the bathwater. We desperately need some sun on our skin to make vitamin D, and a lot more of it than the doctors and health people have been recommending for a long time.

We have known for years that we need vitamin D and calcium for strong bones and the recommended vitamin D levels were set when the major concern was to avoid rickets in children. Later vitamin D became a concern because older people were developing osteoporosis and needed to strengthen their bones to see them through their old age.

Vitamin D is usually metabolized by the body from sunlight but in these days of “slip, slop, slap” of sunscreen, too many of us are now avoiding the sun when we should be reveling in it for at least a few hours each week – but do be careful, we still want to avoid getting burnt.

Most people are now vitamin D deficient and this is having a terrible consequence. We are finding more and more diseases which are made worse by lack of vitamin D. A range of cancers are made more likely by a lack of vitamin D, as is multiple sclerosis and diabetes.

An article in the Annals of Epidemiology, published early in 2009 said that women who had high levels of Vitamin D had less than half the chance of getting breast cancer and only one quarter the chance of dying from it than those who had the lowest levels.

Think about that for a moment. The journal article suggests a woman can cut their risk of getting breast cancer by more than half? And their chance of dying of it by three quarters? Why are we not hearing that being trumpeted from the roof tops?

One of the problems is that medicine has got itself caught up in a mess – a research mess. Medicine has developed a good way of working out whether a drug will improve outcomes. However most research is done by drug companies but because there isn’t a large profit to be made it just isn’t worth it to them. In addition most of the research and medical agenda has been hijacked by the drug companies so that even when a non-drug, natural activity or supplement is found to be useful there is a strong inertia in the medical profession to taking it up.

It is time to take responsibility for your own health and get out in the sun or go get some Vitamin D3 from your local pharmacist as almost everyone in the developed world is now deficient. You need 2000IU per day as a minimum. However next time you go to see your family physician or go to have a blood test then ask for a Vitamin D blood test as some people have very low levels and need to have higher doses of Vitamin D than 2000IU daily to get their levels up to a reasonable level quickly.

P.S. If you are still worried about the skin cancer problem then think on this: skin cancer kills some 1600 people a year in Australia. This is not good. But lack of vitamin D kills over 3000 people a year from breast cancer in Australia and over 4000 people a year from colorectal cancer. This is much worse.

Indulge During the Holidays Without Gaining Weight

We’re right smack in the middle of holiday-celebration season, and, if you’re like most of my patients, you want to indulge in all the food and merrymaking and not have to worry about weight gain. Well, the holidays are for fun and fantasy, but, we have to be a little realistic when it comes to keeping that scale needle from moving too far forward during the holidays.

Did you know that most people average 1-2 pound weight gain over the holidays? It’s true. That wouldn’t be so bad if they got rid of it in the first 2-3 weeks of New Years. Unfortunately, most holiday weight gain tends to not only stay on during the winter months but may even stay permanently getting added to every year! To prevent that from happening, I’d like to share with you some tips on how NOT to gain weight during the holidays, and still have fun and partake in the delicious feast of foods that characterize this time of year.

Control Your Food Intake

There’s no real reason why you shouldn’t be able to eat the foods you love during the holidays andnot gain any additional weight. Sound impossible? Well, it’s a lot harder than it sounds. Here are some of my favorite holiday weight gain prevention tips:

Water is your ally. A staple of all natural health diets is water, and you should be drinking adequate amounts of water every day anyway, but during the holiday party times, let it also be your ally in helping you control how much you eat. Drink a full, 12-16 ounce tumbler size of cold water with some lemon slices in it on the way to a party or upon first arriving, before you eat anything. When your stomach is full, it will really help you pare down food portions.

Don’t go hungry. To avoid overeating at a party, don’t starve yourself during the day, thinking you’re saving up for party food. This always ends in overeating because psychologically you’ve already given yourself a free pass to eat too much. Instead, eat a smaller, yet nutritious, breakfast, and lunch if the party is not until evening, or just eat an apple and an ounce of cheese, if the party starts in the early afternoon. Make your small meals a little protein, like tuna fish, chicken, a hard boiled egg, cottage cheese, and a small amount of complex carbohydrate like a vegetable or fruit.

Spoonfuls, not Platefuls: The best way to outsmart a holiday buffet filled with a number of things you want to eat is to take a little of everything you would like instead of a small plate with a few things that you keep going back for more. I recommend using the large plate and, instead, using the dish’s serving spoon, which is about twice the size of a regular tablespoon, take 1 spoonful of several things you would really enjoy. Just be sure your plate has more proteins like roast beef, turkey or ham, and more green and yellow vegetables, than white potatoes, corn, or breads, go very lightly with the gravies. Think drizzle rather than river on your plate, a pat of butter on vegetables, rather than a golf ball. If you have room for dessert after this amount of food, use a small plate with a small sample of whatever is served. Think grocery store food sample size for desserts. This allows you to try a few things and not feel deprived.

Exercise. Many of us have a hard time keeping a regular exercise routine in non-holiday times, but during the holidays, it’s even more crucial to get some regular exercise at least 4-5 days a week if you can. This will help burn off those extra calories. Aim for 30-40 minutes a day of walking, bicycling if the weather allows, or using a stair stepper or elliptical at the gym.

Focus on fun. Did you ever go to a holiday party and leave without knowing what really went on in some of the other rooms where people were dancing, or having a lively discussion about something, because you were sitting too close to the buffet table? Get up and mingle and join in a conversation, dance with someone, or get a group together to go for a walk to look at holiday lights. In other words, focus on doing something other than eating. Most of all have fun!

Alcohol. Some of my patients like to have a glass of wine or two, or a mixed drink, at holiday parties, and this is fine. Just don’t over do it and be sure to eat soon after. Avoid the sugary mixed drinks, or liqueurs, as they really spike your appetite. Try to stick to clear red or white wines, a martini, etc.

Calorie trading. The day after the holiday party, trade down your higher amount of party calories by eating less the next day or so. Focus on proteins and vegetables, very limited amounts of sugar (read labels), and drink plenty of water.

As I tell my patients, the holidays are for the 4 F’s – family, friends, fun and food. Enjoy all four of them by controlling your food and alcohol intake, and getting in some exercise. Most of all enjoy yourself and have a healthy, happy holiday season!

Relief Remedies – Drugs and Their Efficacy

When we are looking for relief remedies for a medical condition many in the community turn to their medical practitioner to help them find a remedy for their problem. In this they make the assumption that their doctor is the best person to advise them as to what can make them better. As a result of this belief most expect that any drug prescribed by their doctor will be effective, but is this the case?

That very much depends on what you mean by effective. As a health researcher I have been looking at this question for more than a year. Most people I ask expect a prescribed drug to be 90-100% effective, otherwise why would the doctor prescribe it? Doctors become very uncomfortable when I give these figures as they know that few drugs are that effective. They do understand that a high belief is likely to improve the outcome for the patient, but they also recognize that that is not what it necessarily all about. I have often heard them say, “Patients have unrealistic expectations of what drugs can do.”

There are a number of issues here. The first is the matter of evidence. The second is the matter of who is allowed to say what the evidence is and how this impacts on what can be offered to people who want to improve their health.

While this is obviously a very large topic I would like to draw out just a couple of points.

I accept that most medical practitioners mean well and care for their patients. However most medical practitioners, their employers and the pharmaceutical companies make enormous profits out of people who are ill. Whenever billions of dollars are at stake then we have to recognize the moral hazard that exists. It is just too easy to turn a blind eye to the lack of good outcomes and worse, the level and severity of side effects to say nothing of the effect of the cost on the patient’s wallet.

For example chemotherapy only adds just over 2% to the average 5-year survival rate of people with cancer with horrendous side effects for the vast majority of patients. Breast cancer patients have an average life span of 20 years and a 78-85% 5-year survival rate in Australia but chemotherapy only contributes 1.5% to that survival rate. A range of cancers for which chemo is prescribed add NO additional survivors. It is time that these figures became well known. Chemotherapy drugs are not the cancer remedies most of us have come to believe.

Statins, a drug prescribed to lower cholesterol levels also has very low rates of effectiveness. When I searched dozens of the top medical journal papers looking at the cholesterol issues, and buried right down into the data (ignoring the positive titles, introductions and discussions), I was gobsmacked. Firstly, the drugs had no improvement in death rates for women or the elderly. And secondly for men the number needed to treat to save one life was 250 for five years on the drugs. 1250 years of drug taking with many suffering side effects to save one life?

As a third example, the package insert of the H1N1 monovalent vaccine says [Section 12.1 Mechanism of Action] “the administration of the flu vaccine has not been correlated with protection from influenza illness”. This is amazing in its audacity. Here we have the government promoted drive for mass vaccination and its own covering paperwork says that there is no evidence that it offers protection.

These examples are just a few showing the moral hazard from profit making – pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, doctors and government are all involved.

So what does this mean to us as individuals? If you have an expectation of 90-100% efficacy for a drug prescribed then you need to tell the doctor – you are paying for their time and the drugs, after all. If you are asked to go on long term medication then you might like to ask for evidence in writing that the drug does come up to standard. When my own doctor tried to scare me into taking a particular medication and provided me with the scientific papers I discovered they didn’t say what the drug companies and doctor said they did. When I discussed the results with her she was quite perplexed.

Perhaps one way to think of it is that if the relief remedies being offered are bio-identical to what the body produces or is a nutrient normally found in foods known to be good for you then you can be reasonably comfortable in taking it. However if it is a pharmaceutical drug, then exercise caution and demand to see the “rigorous scientific evidence sufficient to substantiate the claims.” You want the actual medical journal papers, not the government guidelines. Even if you can’t make much sense out of the paper, it makes your doctor think several times before making unrealistic claims.

Devil’s Claw Went Up to Alabama

The devil’s claw was a very helpful herb. As he traveled away from his home in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa he had only thing on his mind; to cure an ailment. He had traveled almost the entire continent of Africa, but did not feel that he was needed there. Suddenly and without warning he realized that he needed to go to the New World (America). He zoomed across the sea and before long he was in Florida. But he felt something pulling him further north and west. He traveled up through Florida and into Georgia and still he kept moving.

When he got to the middle of Alabama he saw only too well why he had come and why he was needed so much. He was approaching this poor hapless person who had arthritis and she was surrounded by drugs. He rushed in quickly to offer his help.

“Hello”, the Devil’s Claw said a little too enthusiastically.

“My name is Devil’s Claw. What’s your name?”

“Alice Bennet”, she responded apathetically.

“I have come to offer you my services to help you with your arthritis”, Devil’s Claw told her in a caring tone.

Devil’s Claw could that see she was about to answer but just then the head drug stepped in and interrupted with, “We don’t need any amateurs here. We drugs are the professionals and we have everything all under control here!”

“I can see that”, Devil’s Claw retorted sarcastically. Then he continued with, “If you are feeling bold and daring I would like to make a bet with you. If I win this women’s health will be restored and I will continue wandering this land and helping as many as I can. If I lose I will leave off and go home and you will never see me again.”

“On behalf of my colleagues I will take this bet. It will be only too easy and enjoyable to see you defeated. We are the authorities and everyone knows that drugs are the only answer for treatment”, the head drug announced pompously.

Devil’s Claw then turned back to Alice and said, “I want you to make a tea of me and drink of it every day for two weeks. During this time you shall not receive any services of these drugs.”

“OK”, she said a little bewildered by it all.

And so it began and she did drink the tea every day. For the first few days it looked like it was going to be too rough for her as the pain increased. Of course the drugs did not keep their promise of the bet and taunted Alice to use their services whenever her pain was active. But she remained firm and did not partake.

After the first week the pain started to subside and she began to feel more at ease and alive. As the second week passed the drugs left one by one as they realized that they had been beat. When the second week had passed Alice did feel oh so much better.

“I want to thank you kind herb for your most effective help. I will continue drinking this tea”, Alice said with much gratitude.

“You are welcome dear Alice”, he responded and then looked momentarily toward the north where I felt another calling. “I must leave now to heal another. I bid you fair health and if you or anyone you know ever needs my service – know that you can count on me.”

At that he was off, heading north toward another in need.

The Neti Pot: A Holistic Cure For Sinus Congestion Or Death Trap?

The Neti Pot, a time tested and holistic cure for sinus congestion, has been featured in the media recently because it’s use was linked to a meningitis-like infection. Mainstream news stories on this topic have scared some people from using natural, non-invasive therapies. In this article, it will be evident that this holistic remedy was not to blame for the deaths of these people. Rather, the contaminated water provided to the victims by the government was the cause of death. It was not the Neti Pot that led to their death, but the contaminated tap water that was placed in the pot.

Naegleria fowleri is the name of the germ that killed the people who used the Neti Pot. Microorganisms, such as the ones that cause meningitis, do not spontaneously come to life when a person uses a natural cure like this one. A better question to ask is why Naegleria fowleri was present inside of supposedly clean tap water that people routinely drink and bathe in?

There are normal bacteria and other germs living inside of everyone’s nose all of the time. People suffer from nasal congestion and infection when non-normal residents move into the nose. Placing tap water inside of your nose does not cause death unless the tap water is contaminated with harmful bacteria. This is the reason why cities and municipalities have water treatment procedures.

Proper hygiene and a healthy immune system are the best ways to prevent infections. Standing water is a breeding ground for germs that prefer to live in water, especially when the standing water contains germs to begin with. Contrary to some people’s belief, germs do not fall from the air and move into water to make people sick. The germs had to already be in the container or the water. The use of salt water should not be eliminated as a holistic cure. Our bodies are made of 60% water. Water is supposed to be life giving and beneficial. When water isn’t fit to be used in the body, the problem lies not in the water itself, but in the contamination of the water.

The use of a Neti Pot provides nasal congestion relief. Neti pots are a holistic cure for nasal congestion that work by delivering saline to the root of the problem, which is the mucus in the nose itself. This saline rinse does not affecting the body or the bacteria in the rest of the body in the manner that taking an oral medication would. Untreated, severe congestion can lead to a painful sinus infection, which will likely require treatment with antibiotics. The use of antibiotics brings with it a host of other complications. The use of a Neti pot helps to avert sinus infections.

Traditional Neti Pot usage provides sinus congestion relief that works harmoniously with your body. Saline, or salt water is not harmful to the body, which is why this holistic treatment works as a natural cure for congestion. Saline water only harms the microorganisms that shouldn’t live on the body.

Saline is a natural cure for getting germs out of the body. Salt draws the water out of bacteria and leads to their death. The use of salt water as a germ killer does not lead to the development of antibiotic resistant mutated germs, the way that the use of antibiotics and antiviral drugs do.

The Neti Pot is an effective and safe, natural cure for sinus infections and nasal congestion. The Neti Pot works as long as the people who use it are given the information that they need to stay safe. In the case of the deaths that have been linked to the Neti Pot use, these deaths weren’t caused by the Neti Pot, but by the dirty and contaminated tap water that they used. Top Four Reasons For Choosing A Natural Health Remedy for Your Child

More children are on medication today than any other time in our history.

The facts alone point to this trend:

1 out of 4 kids today are on a regularly prescribed pharmaceutical drug (source: “Four Things Every Parent Should Know”, Dr. Stephen Chaney, 2011)In 2008, the CDC reported that 2 out of the 4 most commonly used drugs were for children’s asthma and stimulant drugs for adolescents. (source: Prescription Drug Use Continues to Increase: U.S. Prescription Drug Data for 2007-2008, , Sept 2010)
This drug increase does not seem to be helping to improve the health of our kids. It is only getting worse. More children are struggling with weight issues than ever before, and allergies in the school classrooms are becoming more and more common, just to name a few.

A natural remedy can be a helpful alternative for families wanting to see some different results.

1. To Avoid unwanted side effects

All medications come with side effects–some more obvious or serious than others. I heard recently that for every person taking a prescription medication, they are also taking at least one additional medication to treat it’s side effects. The same is undoubtedly true for our kids.

For example, conventional treatments for ADHD/ADD, also known as psychostimulant drugs, have a wide range of side effects in kids. Most children have issues with insomnia and loss of appetite. These two areas alone rob children of the most beneficial methods the body uses to heal and repair the brain–sleep and proper nutrition.

We know several children on regular allergy medications as well, and they consistently exhibit lack of energy and large dark circles underneath the eyes.

Side effects may also come from regularly used over-the-counter treatments. Just pick up a bottle of children’s medicine and read the warnings. These grave warnings simply don’t exist when utilizing a nutritional healing approach. (I can see it now, “Warning: Too much vitamin C will increase the response of your immune system and might reduce some unknown inflammation.”)

Prescription antibiotics also pose an insidious threat to the long-term health of our kids. While knocking out an infection, they also serve to wipe out the immune support system, leaving kids vulnerable to repeat infections and worse: candida overgrowth.

2. To Avoid Ineffective Treatment

Not all medical treatments or over the counter drugs are proven to be effective 100% of the time.

Children’s cough and cold remedies are very slow to work (if they work effectively at all), whereas an effective herbal remedy can work within minutes and hours.

Antibiotic mis-use and overuse has caused many bacterial strains to adapt and become resistant to treatment.

It is not uncommon for people to undergo several different antibiotics to treat one strain of a flu virus before they find one that works. This trial and error could take weeks. Meanwhile, the pain and discomfort continue to linger and/or get worse.

The benefit of a proper all-natural remedy is that it works every time. The bacteria never build up a resistance to herbs or nutrients.

We use an infection “bomb” in our home that works on every single infection, no matter the cause or location. What a relief when you have kids in your home!

3. To Aid and stimulate healing

The conventional medical approach deals mainly with managing symptoms, not with actual healing at the root cause of the issue.

For example:

Allergy shots to reduce body’s response to allergens Acetaminophen to bring a fever down or take away pain.
Antacids to reduce digestive discomfort.

Creams and lotions to soothe irritated skin and rashes.

Those are all “management” solutions.

Our medical system has become great at treating symptoms but further away from the original intent of medicine which was to heal the body. (see: Hippocrates, the father of western medicine)

A natural, nutritional approach is more holistic in nature. The goal is to support the body’s natural processes of healing, regeneration, and cellular repair.

4. To Save Time and Money

With a natural treatment from home, you no longer have to sit in doctors’ offices or spend time hunting down several different specialists. No extra time out of school. No additional hours lost at work.

An effective natural solution that aids healing can ward off future surgeries or long-term medical treatments that may otherwise be incurred.

It is true that everything comes with a cost. It is our choice whether we pay now to invest in better health or pay later for unhealthy alternatives that really don’t work.

Natural remedies can work miracles in children, whose bodies are already growing, responding, and metabolizing at a much faster rate than ours.

Body, Mind, and Spirit: The Three Pillars of Health

Stay young forever. Lose twenty pounds a month. Improve your memory. Reduce allergic symptoms. Get rid of that flabby stomach. Raise libido. Eliminate tired blood. Restore normal bowel function. Buy this product. Take this pill. Eat this food. How many health-related commercial appeals can you think of?

Whether they are for an exercise machine, a pharmaceutical product or a nutritional or herbal product, many health commercials have two elements in common: they offer “magic bullets,” or quick fixes to health conditions, and the touted products address a purely physical level of being. I can’t think of one conventional medical product whose advertising campaign offers a holistic or multi-dimensional approach to meeting health challenges. And, although complementary medicine is multi-dimensional by nature, the pills and potions are pushed in similarly one-dimensional ways. But deep, lasting changes in ingrained health patterns are rarely one-dimensional. And profound changes always entail movement on more than the physical level.

All life depends on a balance of elements or forces. Night and day. Oxygen and carbon dioxide. Activity and rest. Yin and yang. Where there is imbalance, systems operate out of synch and function is compromised. Human beings are not exempt from this equation. Think of the forces that support a human being in terms of the pillars of a triangle. For radiant health to occur in humans, a balance must exist on all three points of the triangle — spirit, mind and body.

Body

Achieving and maintaining physical health is largely dependent on two lifestyle choices: nutrition and exercise. Except in cases where there is a functional or organic health limitation, appropriate food and exercise will control weight gain and maintain our physical systems in optimal condition.

Choice of exercise is a personal matter. The best exercise is one that raises the pulse rate above 120 beats per minute for more than 15 minutes, five days a week. Within this aerobic guideline, it really doesn’t matter which exercise regimen you choose. Brisk walking will accomplish this goal, especially when carrying two to five pound weights in each hand so the upper body gets a workout while you are walking. Positive results will be achieved as long as you are consistent with an exercise pattern and avoid the obsessive behaviors that hurt, rather than help your body. Leave the “no pain, no gain,” approach to testosterone-saturated locker rooms.

Nutrition is more difficult to get a hold on because of the misinformation and fad diets that flood the marketplace. Each person is biologically individuated, so eating according to a certain “type” really doesn’t work for most people. There is no canned diet that will work for you as well as a diet that you develop based on feedback from your body and some common sense principles.

These principles include:
* Avoid fried foods.
* Eat red meat sparingly.
* Have at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day.
* Lower your alcohol, sugar, salt and caffeine intake to as close to zero as you can.
* Discover which foods you are sensitive or allergic to and avoid them. The most common allergenic
foods are dairy, wheat, corn, eggs and gluten-containing grains.
* Drink at least 8 glasses of pure water a day.
* Eat organically as much as you can and filter all bath, drinking and cooking water.
* Take as few supplements as you truly need.
* If you have difficulty in determining which diet works best for you, find a health practitioner who can assist you.
* Finally, when the body does need medical attention, look to non-toxic, holistic approaches before opting for pharmaceuticals.

Mind

The essential foundation of mind-body medicine is the recognition that for every experience in the mind, there is a corresponding change in the physiology and biochemistry of our body. We have a vast internal pharmacy that can be accessed through conscious choices we make in our lives. A key tenet of mind-body medicine is that health is not the mere absence of disease. Rather, it is the dynamic integration of our environment, body, mind and spirit.

Mind-body medicine regards as fundamental an approach that respects and enhances each person’s capacity for self-knowledge and self-care and emphasizes techniques that are grounded in this approach.

These techniques include self-awareness, relaxation, meditation, mindfulness, exercise, diet, biofeedback, visual imagery, self-hypnosis and group support. It explores and integrates the healing practices of other cultures, such as acupuncture and acupressure, meditation and yoga, as well as alternative Western approaches including naturopathic medicine, herbalism, massage, musculo-skeletal manipulation, holistic repatterning energetic medicine and prayer. It views illness as an opportunity for personal growth and transformation and health care providers as catalysts and guides in this process.

Mind and body are not separate. They are in constant and dynamic interaction. The images, or mental programs,” that reside in your mind dramatically influence your mood (emotions), your behaviors, and the physical state of your body. Because they exert a direct chemical effect on your brain, these images determine whether you feel tired or energetic, in vibrant health or in pain, creative or depressed, dynamic or anxious at any given time.

Spirit

Spirit is the most important of the levels of being, yet it is the most intangible. Spirit is the cosmic glue that holds all three levels together. It is the unifying force in nature. People who are secure in their spiritual lives have fewer fears and tend to deal with health challenges in more constructive ways.

Physicians who work with very ill people know two things about the role of spirit in challenging health conditions: the prognosis is much better and, when it inevitably comes, transition from the body is less fearful and traumatic when a person acknowledges that there is a power in the universe that is greater than themselves.

Incorporating Spirit as part of our daily experience is more than following some preordained set of rules, meditating for hours in lotus position or belonging to a church or religion. It means the recognition that there is a profound inner essence that doesn’t pass when the body does. It also entails striving to live conscious lives in attunement with our highest vision, to the extent that we are able to. And it means a lifelong commitment to the conscious pursuit of growth and change.

Albert Einstein once said words to the effect that problems we face cannot always be solved on the same level on which they were created. To me, this means that only by developing new perspectives and growing in spirit can we truly weather the inner transformations that are required to cause shifts on the physical and mental/emotional levels.

For purposes of discussion in this article I have presented the three levels of being separately. In reality, the levels intertwine and blend into each other with no clear dividing lines. Holistic physicians always assess their patients in terms of “center of gravity.” This means that we evaluate the presenting condition from both energetic and clinical perspectives to determine which level of being plays the strongest influence in the pattern of illness. We then taper our approach to the patient in an attempt to restore balance and assist in the processes of transformation and growth.

Natural Health – Defeat The Challenge

What is Natural Health?

The definition of Natural Health is somewhat ambiguous, but it is generally understood as taking care of Health challenges without resorting to pharmaceuticals, but using natural means instead. That includes Food, Herbs and Alternative Medicine, such as Acupuncture, Homeopathy, and the likes. A Doctor that practices Natural Medicine are called ND or NMD in the US, or simply Naturopath. But the price for this ambiguity is lack of respect: Naturopathic Doctors are still fighting for National acceptance, while their title is only accepted in a few States in the US, and, not surprising, people are pretty much in the dark on how a NMD can restore Health. Unlike conventional medical schools that train MD’s, accredited Naturopathic Colleges teach Nutrition and its function on the Human Body.

What Sustains Health?

Since the vast majority of Illness come as a result of poor Nutrition, apart from other Lifestyle issues (smoking, drinking, lack of sleep, eating late, etc.), our innate behavior is first searching for healthy Food, as soon as there is evidence of an unwanted symptom. We know that there is Food to sustain overall Health and then there is Food to heal specific conditions. But what about access to such Foods when we need it?

Herein lies the problem: Natural Health requires Natural Food, but what is Natural Food? Produce in industrialized countries is inundated with Pesticides and may have lost most of the Nutrients to food miles. Unlike processed Foods, Produce carries no Nutrition Labels, so how is the consumer to know how long ago it was harvested and how much Nutrition is still left? The answer is, we don’t know to begin with, and we are deliberately deceived by visual appearance of produce, that is supported by chemical treatments to last at least beyond the cash register.

Produce in America is – often genetically engineered – grown entirely for Profit and not at all with the Consumers Health in mind. That trend has led to produce hugely oversized fruits and vegetables devoid of flavor and nutrients. For example, a peach in the US has been reduced in Vitamins that one would have to eat 54 of them, in order to get the same Health benefit that one peach delivered 50 years ago (Dr. Bob Marshall, Premier Research Labs). Clearly, today’s produce is grown for transportation and not for consumption, it is engineered and chemicalized to withstand the harshest conditions during weeks of transportation. To begin with, fruits are harvested long before they reach maturity and before they have developed their nutritional value. Once they reach their point of sales, they are treated with specially developed gases and chemicals to instantly induce ripeness appearance. One familiar and pathetic example is the Banana that after purchase, perishes before it ripens, or looks ripe yellow but can’t be peeled and is inedible.

So it follows that we have to buy Organic! But what does that mean, no Pesticides, harvested when ripe? Unfortunately, the USDA Organics standard is weak to begin with and then rarely enforced. But even if a Produce has been grown “Certified Organic”, doesn’t mean it is pesticides free and there is no guarantee of higher nutrition, because it may have been sourced in China, delivered to a Distribution Warehouse in the Midwest, and then Trucked 1,000 miles to the destination. And how does the Produce withstand such abuse/ By being sprayed and fumigated several times.

Then, of course, there is the problem of ridding the Produce of its numerous unlabeled chemicals before consumption. The USDA lists 42 pesticides for Apples and 54 for Strawberries. Obviously, it should be crystal clear that rinsing the Produce under tap water is a futile attempt to flush away the harmful bacteria, let alone the toxic chemicals that are sealed under a coat of water resistant wax. Failing to remove these chemicals means they are being consumed, with potentially dire Health consequences.

How to navigate the toxic Food mess

You can find out what chemicals lurk on your Produce by searching the Pesticides Action Network database, then you can decide how to rid the Produce from the specific toxins. If you have a water Ionizer – Alkalizer machine, you can first soak the Produce in high pH water, followed by rinsing under the resulting Acid water. Otherwise you can buy bottled “Fruit & Vegetable Wash” formulas at large supermarkets. You can also make your own using a mixture of vinegar and water, lemon juice and baking soda; there are “how to do’s” on the web. But under no circumstances shortcut the procedures, even though you can’t see the contamination until you look at the solvents after soaking.

Finally, let’s not forget the Meat! We know that US Beef from Feedlots comes to you loaded with Antibiotics, synthetic Hormones and Transfat, because the American Consumer is unwilling to pay a little more for Grass Fed Beef that is healthier. The atrocious treatment of Chickens and Pigs in CAFO’s has received infamous publicity. It really doesn’t need a lot of brain work to realize that an Egg from a factory where Hens are kept under extreme and chronic distress, yields little nutritional value, compared to an Egg from a free roaming Hen.

Find Out What Herbal Health Is All About

To most people herbs are thought of in terms of enhancing flavor in cooking. People also think of herbs is reference to natural medicine and oriental medicine. A very common use of the term herbal is in relation to herbal teas.

Actually an herb can be any plant. Herbal health is all about using specific plants (herbs) that have specific know compounds that are used in natural health and as medicine.

While herbal health may be thought of as using herbs like some form of medicine, herbs are also whole foods that support holistic health.

When I think of herb for health I feel it is the idea of using edible plants that have powerful nutritional healing and holistic health benefits to balance the body.

Often it seems herbs are mystified as being exotic potions or drug like compounds that only very specific practitioners or healers know how to use. While there is some truth to this, especially with formulas and combinations of herbs, there are also a whole range of herbs used for herbal health that are easily understood.

Herbal health is a modality for creating and supporting optimal health.

In China and in many cultures all over the world herbal remedies have successfully been used to promote health since the dawn of man.

Herbal health has been around forever and has been widely accepted by past and present societies all over the world. Yet there does continue to be a mistrust and a lot of misinformation about herbal health that persists in the the U.S. culture. Ignorance is partly to blame but there is also a concerted effort on the part of the American medical industry and the pharmaceutical industry to limit and repress the knowledge and use of herbal health therapies and medicinal herbs.

Natural medicine remedies, cures and therapies are often very inexpensive and because they do not offer the massive profits to the drug and medical industry infrastructure they are repressed. The government plays into this as well through the lobby influence of these industries. There have been ongoing efforts by these industries in collusion with the FDA and other governmental agencies to suppress and even ban the use of herbs for health and for treatment of illness and disease. Recently there has even been attempts to criminalize natural medicine practitioners and their use of herbal therapies.

The reality of herbal health is that herbs have been used for centuries to improve and maintain health and to cure illness and disease. As we look at the U.S. western medicine health care system today, we see that the U.S. population has evolved into one of the most unhealthy on this planet, while at the same time being the wealthiest and most well fed. The western conventional health system is heavily based on the use of pharmaceutical drugs to chase symptoms with no effective understanding or program for preventative health. People wait till they are ill then they are put on drugs to maintain their illness and often told to take the drugs for the rest of their lives. No actual healing or cure ever takes place.

Herbal health is based on a holistic health model that uses natural medicine and nutrition as a preventative process to avoid illness and disease. If people do get sick then the herbal health model uses herbs for natural medicine and nutrition to heal by re balancing the body.

Healing and curing can mean the same thing or can be two different perceptions. If you are healed of an illness or imbalance then you no longer have the illness or imbalance this is the same as saying you are cured. There are some limited occasions where you are cured with medicine or a process without going through a healing process. Like the use of an antidote, surgery or a serum that automatically cures your specific illness. Actually outright automatic cures are rare, most illness and disease is about healing.

Illness and disease is caused or allowed to develop from imbalances in the body’s systems. The use of herbs or natural health processes to create and maintain vibrant health and prevent illness and disease has actually proven to be far more effective over time than the conventional western medical model.

As long as massive profit is available from health care, illness and disease, then people will be misinformed and prevented from using the herbal health model. Herbs are an inexpensive form of effective medicine, for maintaining optimal health and for illness and disease prevention.

Obesity – A Weighty Issue

The statistics for obesity are alarming and the news just keeps getting worse. There are at least 300 million clinically obese adults worldwide and a further 22 million children worldwide under the age of 5 are overweight. The situation is now a global epidemic among western nations. Low fitness levels in children, health habits and behaviours learnt in childhood are having a major impact on long-term health. Many children have learnt poor health habits from their overweight parents, this trend will lead to increasingly grim statistics as overweight children will grow into obese adults in future years.

A person is obese when they have a large excess of body fat. Generally obesity is the result of consuming more energy than is being used during the day. Meaning that if a person is active doing regular exercise, walking regularly and burning the energy off, then the body will reach a happy state. However if the energy from food and drink is not burnt off through exercise then this will turn to fat, increasing body mass and significantly endangering health and ultimately survival.

The answer to obesity is simple – eat less calories and do more exercise – but this simple prescription is often the hardest to do. There are a variety of factors that prevent this simple solution and turn it into a far more complex health issue. Mental health, emotional eating, environmental factors, self-control issues, greed, parental upbringing, taste addictions, genetics, hormones, religion, metabolism, race, class, gluttony all have a part to play in the fine balance between eating enough and over eating. Every individual is different, bringing different motivating factors and fears pushing them into the physical body shape they are in.

However eating less calories doesn’t mean eating less food. Real food full of a variety of nutrients and prepared in more traditional ways generally has a lower calorie intake than prepared packaged foods, sodas, alcohol and fast food. These foods provide a large sugar kick to the body along with significant fat but they are often lacking in quality nutrients the body actually needs for health and survival. Eating a large quantity of these foods can result in obese people actually suffering from malnutrition, a term more commonly used when referring to third world nations. Eating and drinking more quality foods with higher nutritional intake is actually the answer to eating less calories but more food. Kimberly Taylor, Clinical Nutritionist says that choosing alternatives such as natural fruit juice instead of sodas, increasing fruit and vegetables and eating meals made at home from ingredients grown and picked from the garden or sourced from local producers will help to fulfill and sustain the body providing optimum nutrition for health and healing without leaving it depleted of nutrients and malnourished.

Exercise is another important factor in the equation of combating obesity. Nothing beats a regular, dedicated 30mins+ exercise session but there are some activities in daily life that will all help burn off extra calories, for example, taking the stairs instead of the lift, walking to the shops instead of driving and walking around while talking on the phone. Whatever your exercise routine is, start slowly and build up gently as your body becomes used to the routine and change from inactivity to active and healthy lifestyle.

The prescription for correcting obesity and reducing the devastating worldwide statistics is as individual as obese people themselves. This is why one diet doesn’t work for everybody and one solution is not the answer. A multifaceted approach must be taken across lifestyle as well as diet, looking at environmental influences and foundation learning and education.
